Clergy Ministry

The Diocese of Hereford supports clergy at every stage of ministry through training, development, pastoral care, and specialist support. From curacy to retirement, resources are available for ongoing learning, self-supporting ministry, ministerial reviews, and more. Dedicated officers and programmes ensure clergy are equipped, encouraged, and cared for in their calling.

The Diocese of Hereford supports lifelong learning for clergy and lay ministers through events, training, grants, and courses as part of their commitment to ongoing ministerial development.

The Ministerial Review process ensures all clergy complete a 360-degree review and pastoral interview to support development and discern God’s ongoing call in their ministry.

Our Deliverance Ministry offers pastoral support through a trained team to help individuals experiencing fear or oppression, working within Church of England guidelines to bring God’s peace and healing.

The Diocese values and actively supports Self-Supporting Ministry, recognizing its diverse and imaginative role in growing the Church and serving the wider community.

Curacy is the initial 3–4 year training period after ordination in which new clergy gain practical experience under supervision, supported by structured learning, before being assessed for future ministry roles.

We provide support for retired clergy and their families through appointed officers, charitable assistance, and guidance on Permission to Officiate, with resources and contacts available via the Bishop’s Office.

This page offers clergy a central hub of trusted resources and contacts to support their wellbeing, including counselling, spiritual direction, family support, and mental health tools for every stage of ministry. It also connects clergy with diocesan and national support networks, ensuring they never face challenges alone.
