Sponsors as Landlords Workshops
The Government has announced that Ukraine guests who have already extended their visa (UPE) will be able to apply to extend their visa for a further two years. However, upon receiving the further two-year extension, “thank you” payments to their host will end. When hosting more than one guest, thank you payments will end in line with the longest UPE.
Once thank you payments stop, hosts are not required to evict their guests but will need to consider their future options. There are three potential options available to hosts.
- Continue sponsoring without payment from the council, including the Ukrainian guest as part of the household and arrange with the guest around contributing to household bills.
- A simple, formal agreement between the host and guests that makes the host their landlord. This allows hosts to receive rent directly from guests in place of “thank you” payments. Depending on the setup, this could be either a standard tenancy agreement for self-contained accommodation, or a lodger agreement under the Rent a Room scheme* when guests stay in the host’s main home.
- Support guests into independent accommodation. For example, social housing for those on low income or private rented housing provided it is affordable.
We will be running workshops throughout 2026 to help sponsors work out what the best next steps for them might be, you can sign up for these using the links below.
