"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it" (Psalm 24:1)
Welcome to the Environment section of our website. You will find information and support here on a range of environmental matters for individuals, churches, and communities. There is much happening across the counties and working in partnership with other organisations and local communities is at the core of our approach.
Our Environmental Strategy
God has generously given us a wonderful, beautiful world full of abundance and with enough resources for all. As Christians, we are called to steward the earth and to encourage others to do the same. To do this, we must tread more lightly on the earth and reduce our carbon footprint as well as enhance our ecology and increase biodiversity.
Ignoring environmental concerns is also a social injustice because those who suffer most from the effects of climate change are those with the least ability to pay inflating energy costs; and those who live in countries that are often placing the least impact on the environment, but which experience the worst extremes of climate events.
Through our strategy consultations, a consistent theme was the importance of caring for the environment. It is clearly something that unites people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs. Because of this, it provides a means of loving God’s creation, tackling injustice, and providing opportunities to build relationships and grow the church. To that end, a major focus of our environmental work is on working with parishes to use environmental issues as a means of engaging with their local community and other local churches, potentially creating not just eco churches but ‘eco villages’.In these pages, we hope you will find help to get started on a tangible action plan for your own life, your church, and your community, and to find encouragement from those of us on a similar journey.
To keep things simple we are organising our information in the same way as Eco-Church. If you’d like to find out more about Eco-Church and how to register click here or to see our map of Eco-Churches across the Diocese click here
