2026 marks the 1350th Anniversary of the foundation of the Diocese of Hereford in 676 AD. For over a thousand years, the people of Hereford Diocese have caught glimpses of God's magnificent glory, seeking to join in through impressive feats of church construction, the creation of the Mappa Mundi, and enduring legacies in support of a continuing Christian presence throughout our rural diocese.

Previous Bishops of HerefordThe Great Hall at the Bishop's Palace in Hereford is lined with portraits of previous bishops, dating back to Bishop Herbert Westfaling 1586-1601, pictured here. But the list goes back much further, all the way to 676 AD in fact, and Bishop Putta, considered the founder of the diocese and posthumously named as Bishop. The list includes two saints: Saint Leovegard and Saint Thomas de Cantilupe.
