Communicating

Introduction

Communicating involves both giving and receiving information; How does your church share information about its life and work, and how does it listen to its members and those in the wider community too? When it comes to matters of giving and money, questions such as “Where does my giving go to?” and “What difference does my giving make?” are frequently asked. How well does your church answer these really important questions? By regularly making direct connections between giving and the life and work of your local church, people will begin to understand and appreciate the real difference regular, planned and tax-efficient giving makes to the life of every one of our churches. Your latest Mission Action Plan is an ideal way to do this; but make sure you share it; don’t keep good news to yourselves! Remember too, that there are now so many ways to communicate; verbal and written forms, which might include print, digital, website and social media; and of course non-verbal communication, such as the welcome given to someone arriving at church; all these things could make a difference to giving to your church.

Digital Giving

In the wider charitable sector, new forms of giving are growing fast. Although regular giving is the bedrock of support for most churches, one-off donations are a very useful additional supplement to this. Enabling people to donate a one off donation online can really increase the amount your church can raise for specific appeals, one off events, and especially at occasions such as Baptisms and Weddings.

There are a number of different ways to encourage digital giving, including on-line and text giving. Most operators charge a fee for their giving service and digital platform. Top tip

Shout from the roof-tops! - and always be sure to tell people about the value of something, not just the costs. Stories and pictures from your local church and community are an excellent way of doing this.

Make sure you and your PCC are up to date on all aspects of Parish Resources, giving and stewardship by subscribing to a free regular e-bulletin from the Parish Resources Team at the Church of England here.
