Year 6 Leavers Celebration Services 2021

To help Year 6 pupils celebrate their time at primary school and prepare for their next steps into their secondary schools, we have created a special leavers service for 2021 that you can participate in at your school.  This year, we are unable to worship together at Hereford Cathedral and at Pontesbury, so have planned a special hybrid service, with pre-recorded videos and parts for your pupils to lead at school or church.

The Service Outline (Purple text indicates where your pupils will be leading worship)

  • Welcome and blessing - pre-recorded
  • Bible Reading - Year 6 pupil from your school (words will be on the screen)
  • Song - iSingPop video
  • Address/Talk - Bishop of Hereford (pre-recorded)
  • Prayers/reflections -  led by your Year 6s
  • Prayer Actvity - see below
  • Lord's prayer - pre-recorded
  • Commissioning Promises - pre-recorded (space for your pupils and staff to respond)
  • Greetings from Secondary schools (pre-recorded)
  • Reflection - Pre-recorded by Mark Harrington
  • Song - iSingPop video
  • Blessing - led by your Year 6s

To register your school to receive the information pack for running your service, and to receive the private video link then please complete the online booking form.

The video will be hosted on a private YouTube link and will be available from the 5th July 2021, allowing you to plan your service for the end of term.

There is no charge for this service and it is open to all of our Church of England primary schools.

Why not involve your Year 6 children in preparing for the event by entering our art competition to create an illustrated Bible text card as a gift for all pupils?

Plus we need your help to gather photos of all our schools and local churches to create a montage of our great family of church schools across the diocese for use in the videos.

Where to run your service

As the lockdown rules change, you may be able to invite parents in for their Year 6 Leavers service, subject to your own risk assessments.  However, it will also work with just the pupils and staff present. Another option may be to run it in the church providing you have access to a video projector and sound system, again this will be subject to both the school’s and church’s own risk assessments.

Prayer Activity: A foot in the past and a foot in the future

There will be a simple prayer activity for your pupils to get ready before the service. This will involve writing prayers on their footprints (drawn around their feet/shoes and cut out). One footstep will be a written prayer/reflection of thanksgiving about their time at school. The other will be a prayer for the future. During the service there will be space for the pupils to lay a trail of these footprint prayers around the worship area as a combined prayer for their journey ahead.

Photos of the Diocese family of schools

To help us reflect the breadth of our 75 church primary schools, we are asking each school to email us digital photos of their school, Year 6 pupils and local church. These will be used to create a montage during the reflective worship. Make sure you have permission for the sharing of pupil photos before sending them to us at education@hereford.anglican.org.

Art Competition

We would love to send an illiustrated card to each Year 6 leaver as a memento and an encouragement. So we are looking for budding Year 6 artists to help illustrate the Bible verse that will form the reading for the service: ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’ Joshua 1v 9.

Year 6 classes could explore this verse as part of their classroom worship and then be given time to reflect and respond by illustrating this verse using symbolism, colour and images etc.

We will use some of the competition entries as images during the service and the winning design will be used to illustrate the card to be given to all the Year 6 leavers.  We may also use these images for training and other publicity in the future.

Guidance for Artwork:

  • Entries must be original (pupil’s own work) and can be in any media, including their own photographs. (see scanning/photographing entries below)
  • The artwork should interpret the verse in some way and must include a short written reflection by the pupil about their artistic interpretation of the verse. These should be submitted as a pdf or word document separate from the artwork. (They will not form part of the printed image).
  • Artwork can be collaborative or individual.
  • Entries can include the wording of the verse in their artwork or it can be added digitally later to the chosen design if suitable.
  • All 2D entries will need to be digitally scanned or photographed as jpg or png files and be A4 sized to ensure high quality printing. (The finished card will be reduced in size)
  • Any 3D entries should be photographed against a plain background, so the text can be added easily afterwards.
  • Entries should be emailed to education@hereford.anglican.org before the 4th June 2021.  If files are too large please send via a WeTransfer.com link. We will not be accepting any postal entries.
