Caynham joins the 'space programme'

Caynham 1The Churchyard at St. Mary's, Caynham near Ludlow is being transformed in a project that will see former compost heaps turned into an attractive space for walkers, tourists and local people. Picture shows working party 1

The work has been supported by a £16,000 grant from the Community Spaces programme of the Big Lottery Fund. The work began in November with working parties of villagers and members of the Caring for Gods Acre churchyard group clearing scrub and cutting back trees.

Caynham 3Through this year more working days will see local craftsman and volunteers carrying out improvements including tree surgery,Caynham 2 scrub and soil clearance and hedge planting as well as the creation of a new public open space. This is particularly important to the village following the move of Caynham's Bishop Hooper Primary School to Ashford Carbonell, which has led to the loss of informal public access to the school playing fields.

St. Mary's Churchwarden Stephen Ashford said: "We believe that this project will both help us to preserve the churchyard as a valuable village asset and also enhance our sense of the community in a small village which three years ago was the Calor Shropshire Village of the Year"Caynham Grave before attention
