WHAT HAPPENS IN HEREFORD DIOCESE?
Locally, members manifest their faith in action through the many projects with which they are involved. For example they visit the sick, housebound and those in hospital. They knit for needy children and make cot covers for the Special Care Baby Unit. The Away from it All Holiday Scheme provides much-needed holidays for those who would not otherwise be able to have a holiday. They help with baptism preparation, they help in their local schools and in their parishes.
The support and fellowship the members provide for each other is important too. Prayer underpins all the work of the Mothers' Union . The rhythm of daily prayer and thanks giving unites every member sharing compassion, commitment and dependence on God's grace.
Focus
As a result of the genocide war in Burundi , many women were widowed and now struggle to support their children. Hereford MU's link diocese of Makamba is to set up a goat project to help these families. Each widow will be given two goats providing a source of nutrition and income for the families. Hereford MU have agreed to raise £3000 to help to fund this project.
Nearer to home, members of Cardington Branch are helping to teach youngsters to cook while members in Hereford are looking into ways of supporting poorer families in the city.
Current Issues Worldwide.
T2006 sees the one hundred and thirtieth anniversary of the Mothers' Union , the organisation continues to support families world-wide. Members believe that families must be central to society, positively supported, focused on by policy makers and embraced by faith groups.
Continuing the work done in 2005 the Mothers' Union, along with other NGO's will continue to be concerned about the plight of the world's poor and will continue to lobby on issues relating to Fair Trade and making poverty history.
