The Effectiveness of RE – Thursday 22nd November 2007
We are offering a two-part INSET day on two fundamental and different aspects of good R.E. practice on 22nd November, 2007, at the Bishop Mascal Centre, Ludlow, led by Alan Brown, who lectures in R.E. for Worcester University and was previously the Church of England’s national R.E. officer. The morning will focus on creativity in R.E. ~ “”Creative approaches to R.E.” ~ and will include some ‘hands-on’ examples of good practice. Lunch will be available to those who book and will be followed in the afternoon by a focus on “Assessment in R.E.” It is my hope that, together with what is offered by our SIAS inspectors, this will provide a substantial diocesan response to OFSTED’s recent report, “Making sense of R.E.”, which combines celebrating much good practice with the salutary message that there is, overall, still much room for improvement in Religious Education throughout the country. We would ask for a contribution of £20 per person for those who attend the whole day (9.30 - 3.30 pm) or £10 for a half day, with lunch bookable as an extra charge. It will help us to have an early return of your booking slip (with your cheque, payable to H.D.B.F. please).
Thursday, 24th January, 2008,
We are offering another such RE training day, led this time by Lat Blaylock from REtoday, and Lat will provide a course on teaching Christianity for Diocesan schools. He will draw on the RE Ideas publication and bring together modules relevant to the Agreed Syllabus. DBE has purchased at a discounted rate a copy of the RE resources folder, RE Ideas: Christianity, written by Lat and others, for each DBE school. Work will be done on 24th January helping teachers to make good use of this valuable resource which can be collected, free, by those who attend on the day. Equally, if anyone wants to collect their free copy of this file (normally costing over £35) from the Diocesan Office, so that they can start using it now they are welcome to do so ~ but please come on 24th Jan as well! Costs for this day at BMC Ludlow have deliberately been kept, again, to a minimum, to encourage attendance ~ £10 for the morning, £10 for the afternoon, and choose & pay for your own lunch, as provided by BMC.
