SHARING THE STORY

Through Scripture, worship and word, art, music and poetry, drama, clowning and just living.

WHO IS IT FOR?
For you – not just the vicar. We hope that you will come and join us to discover and develop your gifts, abilities and enthusiasms in order to share the story more effectively in our parishes.

This conference is open to all who participate in and are affected by the life of the churches in the Diocese of Hereford

PROGRAMMEArchbishop Rowan Williams

The conference will be centred around times of common worship at morning, evening and night. Within this framework we shall enjoy presentations from our main speakers in the mornings, with workshops in the afternoons and times of reflection in the evenings. There will be space for personal reflection and time for fellowship.

BRING YOUR GIFTS

As in previous years we hope to gather together a group to lead the singing for the conference. We also ask that those who might care to bring their musical instruments could indicate level of ability and what instrument on the booking form and come prepared to practise together a little, in order to help in our worship.

In addition this year we would like to share works of art and craft that tell the story, and there will be an exhibition of art, crafts and poetry relating to the theme of the conference. If any of you would like to bring items for display please indicate this on the booking form so that adequate space can be provided. This does not have to be your own work, but work which you know or possess which exemplifies the theme.

ACCOMMODATION AND FEES

Accommodation at The Hayes Centre, Swanwick is in single, twin or double rooms. Single rooms are guaranteed to all who require them. If you wish to share with a friend please arrange this with them, and then make it clear on the booking form.

CONFERENCE SPEAKERS

Most Reverend and Right Honourable Rowan Williams:

The Archbishop of Canterbury will be a principal speaker.

Reverend Professor Alister McGrath: Professor Alitstair McGrath

Professor of Historical Theology at Oxford University, Professor McGrath was ordained priest at Southwell Minster in 1980, served his title in Nottingham, and has a special concern to relate theology and ministry. He has published many books, but is best-known for his best-selling works: Christian Theology: An Introduction and The Dawkins Delusion? Atheist Fundamentalism and the Denial of the Divine.

Jenny Joice:

Having originally qualified as an artist in Italy in her twenties, Founding Director of a Cambridge based Family Counselling Service and Co-founding Director of the Leadership Institute, Jenny now runs a small Retreat Centre in the Brecon Beacons for people seeking to discover purpose, vocation and direction in their lives, and equipping them to be effective disciples in God’s Ministry.

Geoff Weaver:

Geoff has a ministry as a church musician, having recently taught and conducted in South Africa, Estonia, Hong Kong and Egypt. As a CMS mission partner in Hong Kong- and as a staff member at the training college in Birmingham - he developed a keen interest in the songs of the world church. In the 1990s he published 2 volumes of World Praise, and has recently published a new volume of world music In every corner sing. In 1998 he directed the music for the Lambeth Conference, a role he will repeat this year in Canterbury. He has a passion for enabling those who think they cannot sing to discover that they can.

Artists in Residence

We are glad to welcome as artist in residence to the conference Richard Box, who draws, paints and embroiders. He is teacher, lecturer and author of several books including Drawing for the Terrified.

Roly Bain, ClownRoly Bain, clown to the conference, is already known to many in the diocese. As clown and priest Roly uses circus, story and slapstick to preach the gospel in his own foolish ways. For him the clown is the jester, the licensed truth teller and the vulnerable lover.
