Woman GraduateEducation and Christian Discipleship

2008 - 2009

Growing as Christian Disciples

This course, now in its second year, is designed to help people to reflect on what it is to be a disciple of Jesus and how to encourage and support others in their Christian journeys.

Read what one of the current students, Bridget Jones, wrote about the course, “The course is presented in a way that caters for everyone as an individual and for the stage they are at on their journey to becoming a disciple of Jesus in the 21st Century. The course material is delivered in a variety of ways to cater for individual learning preferences.”

Emphasis on Practical Christian Discipleship

The emphasis of the certificate will focus on practical matters such as becoming a more effective disciple and an ambassador in the Kingdom of God; mission, including witnessing beyond the church; helping others in their walk with God; Christian Spirituality; and core modules such as Working with the New Testament, Working with the Old Testament and developing modern Study Skills.

Another student, Richard Priest, wrote, “The course is a wonderful way to share your journey in Christ with others.” The aim of the course is to encourage and enable individuals to understand what makes an effective Christian Disciple who is active in their local church and among the communities it serves.

Starting in September 2008

The certificate is accredited by the University of Worcester at Higher Education Level Four (HE4), a nationally recognised qualification.

The course is open to everyone and will consist of six taught modules and two locally based independent studies. The certificate will take two years to complete. However, it may be possible to give credit to prior learning as appropriate.

Practical Details

The main modules will be taught centrally at the Bishop Mascall Centre, Ludlow, by experienced tutors from both the Diocese and the University. People studying on the course will be fully supported and will be encouraged to use the BMC Library, the Cathedral Library and enjoy the full facilities of the University of Worcester as part time students.

When will it start and how long?

The next course will begin in September 2008 and will consist of one taught module per term over five Saturday morning sessions, including lunch. The independent study units will run alongside the ‘taught’ sessions. Although the course is designed to develop its students over two years, it may be possible to study individual modules separately, please contact the Lay Training Officer for information.

How much will it cost?

The current cost of the Certificate is £90.00 per module. It is worth noting that some of the current course members are supported and sponsored by their local church.

How will I be supported throughout the course?

Support is provided in a number of ways: the module tutor; support groups; a Critical Friend and the local church.

A Brief Description of the Modules

Year 1

Module 1   Study involving Learners

The aim of this module is to help course members to become successful, independent learners with the knowledge, confidence and skills to find and use relevant data in an evaluative way.

Module 2   Exploring Discipleship

Discipleship is fundamental to Christian growth and development. This module explores the concept from both an historical and contemporary viewpoint. It will enable the learner to explore and evaluation their personal Christian formation and how this may help them to support and encourage discipleship in others.

Module 3   Working with the New Testament

This module is seen as fundamental to the rest of the course. It introduces the learner to the purpose of the New Testament (NT) and seeks to reflect upon the NT as a central source of Christian development.

Module 4 (see Module 8)

Year 2

Module 5   Working with the Old Testament

This module aims to introduce the learner to the purpose of the Old Testament (OT) and seeks to reflect upon the major themes of the OT as a source of understanding of God's relationship with his people before the coming of Christ; and of the connections between it and the development of the Christian church.

Module 6   Spiritual Formation and Development

This module will explore the diverse approaches to Christian Spirituality and how course members can encourage spiritual development in themselves, in their home churches and their local community.

Module 7   Connecting Beyond the Church

Central to the church’s mission is the call to witness and evangelism. This module seeks to explore the challenges facing Christians today as ‘people of mission’ living among and reaching out to their communities and beyond.
