CHURCH BELLS TO RING AGAIN
A Herefordshire church is ringing out with joy after getting a grant to ensure af future for their bells. St Bartholomew’s Church at Westhide, just west of the city of Hereford, has received nineteen and a half thousand pounds (£19500) from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The bells have been silent for many years. Two of the bells are more than three hundred years old (300) and the third dates from 1880. The HLF Grant will ensure the medieval frame that holds them will be made safe and that vital repairs can be carried out to the tower.
“We are really grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for not just the money, but the helpful support and advice they have given to bring this to fruition,” said Robin Peers who is overseeing the work. “We will be able to make sure the tower roof is stripped and replaced, using as many of the original welsh slates as we can and that the weathervane which sits at a jaunty angle can be restored to it proper glory.”
Lots of people in the small village, close to Withington on the road to Worcester, have been involved in the fundraising over many years. They finished on the 3rd July with a celebratory barn dance.
“Its been a complicated process to try and work out what had to be done in a small space and deciding the priorities, tower, roof, bells or weathervane. Of course all are interdependent and we are sure we have got it right,” added Robin. “We are looking forward to the work getting done now and I shall be happy when that cockerel on the weathervane is standing proud in its new gilding on the top of the non-leaking tower roof.”
There are plans to produce a brochure for visitors outlining the history of the church and bells and the local area. Parishioners will also be keeping a permanent record of the conservation work and a treasure trail for children which the local school are keen to get involved in producing.
