General Synod has stipulated that parochial fees for weddings and funerals must be at the level set by Synod. Additional charges by parishes are not permitted, except for genuinely optional items. For example, a parish may make an additional charge for a choir or for the use of bells. But a parish may not (as some have hitherto done) routinely add extra charges for 'vicar's transport', 'verger' etc to the statutory fee unless an additional optional facility is being provided.
