Training for Ordained Ministry
Recommended candidates for ordained ministry usually train initially in one of two ways - either at one of the Church of England's theological colleges or with a non-residential training course.
For candidates in our Diocese this is WEMTC, the West of England Ministerial Training Course. WEMTC has a teaching base at Ludlow. For those in the south of the diocese it is also possible to travel to Cheltenham for training.
Some more flexible patterns of training have emerged in recent years and the right way forward for each candidate will be part of the discussions a candidate has with the DDO and Bishop.
People usually train for 2 or 3 years, depending on prior ministerial training and experience.
The discernment process continues through the training period.
Very occasionally the Bishop will use his discretion over the length and content of training for someone who is over 55.
If you train residentially at a college, you will almost certainly be required to
move house. You will receive a maintenance grant from the Church during your training.
If you train non-residentially you will receive travel expenses and a book grant.
The costs of training are met by the diocese or the national Church.
Please note that a decision about the appropriate training pathway must be approved by the Bishop and has to be possible under national guidelines.
A candidate must be recommended for training before May to enter training in the following academic year.
Please also remember that initial training covers the whole of training prior to ordination and then for up to 4 years afterwards. So further training is a priority for all curates after ordination.
