Telford Severn Gorge Deanery

Telford Severn Gorge
This diverse deanery covers but a small geographical area but is the most diverse in the Diocese of Hereford. From the highly populated urban South Telford to the deeply rural villages of Little Wenlock in the North West and Barrow in the south, the contrast between the dense housing of Sutton Hill to the sparsely populated parts of Barrow with Linley and Willey could not be greater.

The Deanery is divided by the River Severn, to the north we have The Madeley Team Ministry (population Circa 28,000) which encompasses Sutton Hill with its modern church, Woodside which has no church building but meets regularly for mission and outreach in the newly built community centre, and Madeley itself which boasts probably the most technically advanced churches in the diocese which is housed in St Michael's Church.

Ironbridge, Coalbrookedale and Little Wenlock (population circa 3500) are all somewhat more rural although of course here we celebrate the Industrial Revolution. Each village has its own church and Services of the Word and the Eucharist are held each Sunday.

South of the river we find a group of parishes centred on the Old Industrial and mining town of Broseley with Benthall, with its rather splendid All Saints Church, Built in 1845 (the third on the site) it seats 500 people. Broseley united with Benthall where St Giles is situated, a now church no longer in regular use. St Giles Barrow is now the parish church for Barrow, Linley and Willey and has foundations dating back to 8th century. St Mary the Virgin Jackfield is a fascinating Victorian building built with the clay products of The Gorge, brick and tiles. (population for the group circa 8000).
