My apologies for the late compilation of this newsletter; I went for ages with little information being received and suddenly a whole load of stuff arrived in my in-tray!

Annual General Meeting
The AGM of Churches Together in Shropshire will be held on May 31st. The venue is Holy Trinity Meole Brace, Shrewsbury at 7.30. The guest speaker will be Jeremy Roberts who is the Hope Together Champion for Shropshire.

The formal notice will be sent out to local Churches Together contacts and others who have formal contact with Churches Together in Shropshire, but anyone is welcome to attend, and hear what Hope Together has to offer Shropshire.

Victim Support Charity(covering Shrewsbury and Telford Courts):
I have attached a copy of a document which provides detail of what we as a charity do, as many people mistakenly believe this service is provided by the police or local authority. Although we currently have a good number of volunteers in both Shrewsbury and Telford to provide our service in the community, we could really do with volunteers from North or South Shropshire who could provide a far more local service to victims in those areas during their time of need.

More pressing and the main reason for sending this is our need for at least another 10 volunteers specifically for our Witness Service that operates in both Telford and Shrewsbury Magistrates and Shrewsbury Crown Courts. The reason these posts are more difficult to fill is because it requires a commitment between 9am and 4pm (with lunch break) each time the volunteer has agreed to a date when they are available, unlike the community element which doesn't require such a lengthy time commitment and has more flexibility.

Due to the need for CRB checks and mandatory attendance for our core training as well as a period of shadowing, it can take months for a volunteer to be effective enough to include on our roster, so the sooner we can identify if there are any potential volunteers to warrant organising a selection day the better.

Should anyone wishing to volunteer want information on how to apply they can either phone our office Monday - Friday on 01743 362812 or go to this website: http://www.victimsupport.org/Home/Get-involved/Volunteering

Receptive Ecumenism Study Day
I received this information from Revd Dr Adam Hood, Vice Principal, The Queen's Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education, Birmingham, B15 2QH:

I am writing to you to share information about a conference we are running here in June. I send this for your own information, but also to ask you to please feed this information through into the Churches Together network in ways that will get it to folks who may be interested in coming along. The brief details of the conference are:

21st June, 10am-4pm: Speakers Prof Paul Avis, Revd Dr Clive Barrett, Prof Paul Murray, Revd Elizabeth Welch.

The conference should be of interest to anyone interested in recent developments in ecumenical thought and practice. We hope that the conference will be a small contribution to the renewal of ecumenical vision in our churches.

United Nations Association(Shropshire branch) has a flagship event on Friday 11 May. The subject is peace and peacekeeping, under the title "What Price Peace?" A former Methodist minister in Church Stretton included in one of his sermons this gem of a quote "You cannot be a Christian and not care about peace". I hope some of the Christians in the Shropshire churches care enough to come and listen to Dame Margaret Anstee who worked in the UN for 40 years and was the first woman to lead a UN peacekeeping mission.
